The Deep History of Sponges and Sponge Diving in the Aegean and Mediterranean from Ancient Times to the Discovery of Ancient Times Eskiçağlardan, Eskiçağların Keşfine Ege - Akdeniz'de Sünger ve Süngerciliğin Dip Tarihi
We don't yet know where and for what purpose humankind first encountered the sea, became familiar with it, and began to utilize it. However, archaeological studies conducted continuously for nearly 100 years in the Near East, Aegean, and Mediterranean regions demonstrate that humanity has been obtaining and consuming seafood for tens of thousands of years. Sponge diving, a dominant economic asset along the coastal areas of the Aegean and Mediterranean in the 19th and 20th centuries, is a highly demanding profession requiring a certain level of expertise. This study examines the use of sponges, its primary input, in various fields in ancient times, through written sources and archaeological data. This study reveals the history of this profession, perhaps dating back to 4500 BC. Sponge diving, which caters to a variety of fields, including cleaning, medicine, mining, and military equipment, has been concentrated in key sponge-rich centers in ancient times, as it has been in recent times. Oppian's rightful definition of sponge diving and sponges, with the words "no suffering is more terrible, no effort more difficult than that of sponge divers", is an indication of how this difficult profession, which carries the possibility of death or lifelong paralysis, is interpreted with the same difficulties not only today but also in the past, and how much sacrifice was required for this profession, which is about to be forgotten.
