The systematic and scientific study of signs, a subject of study since ancient times, has become the subject of semiotics. Initially addressed within the context of linguistics, the subject began to develop as a separate scientific discipline in the early twentieth century, informed by the explanations and institutional frameworks of Ferdinard de Saussure in Europe and Charles Sanders Peirce in the United States.

When asked what this field of study encompasses, the first things that come to mind are familiar road signs, workplace signs, and astronomical signs, followed by visible signs.
