If we were to rank the gifts of courage, glory would rank first. For it is the only thing that alleviates the anxiety that life is short with the thought that future generations will remember us, that creates us from nothing, and that sustains us after death. In short, it is only glory that makes humanity seem to be slowly climbing to the heavens. The Roman people and all nations will always speak of me, and future generations will never remain silent in the face of my deeds. Even now, my enemies still speak of me wherever people gather, and my name is still remembered with respect and gratitude.
