Ahmet Ünal was born in Uşak. He studied History, Archaeology, Hittitology, and Pedagogy at Ankara University's Faculty of Language, History, and Geography and the Higher Teacher Training School, and received a history teaching certificate. After working as an assistant at the same university for one year, he studied Ancient History, Hittite, Akkadian, Greek, Latin, and General Linguistics at the University of Munich, and completed his doctorate in Hittite history. He completed two years of postdoctoral research with the Alexander von Humboldt Scholarship. From 1975 onwards, he served in the Hittitology Department at the Faculty of Language, History, and Geography, becoming an associate professor in the same department in 1979. He served as a visiting associate professor at the University of Munich between 1982 and 1985, and participated in the Hittite dictionary project launched by his teacher, Annelies Kammenhuber. He worked at the University of Chicago between 1985 and 1988, and while working on the dictionary project there, he was registered with the University of Munich in 1988. He was appointed professor of Hittitology and Ancient Anatolian Languages on the condition that he continue his studies, and remained in this position until his retirement.
While still a student, he participated in the Alacahöyük and Çorum Kuşsaray excavations and directed the Çengeltepe excavations, the core of the now-destroyed city of Yozgat. From 1992 onwards, he participated in the Sirkeli (Adana, Ceyhan) excavations conducted by the University of Munich as an excavation philologist. He taught Hittite, Akkadian and Ancient Anatolian Languages, ancient Eastern History, Greek and Roman History, history of civilization, and archaeology at the universities of Ankara, Munich, Chicago, Bern, Konya, Antalya, Antakya, Çukurova, and Hitit (Çorum), and gave numerous lectures both in Turkey and abroad. After retiring from the University of Munich, he worked for a time at Adana University, and served as a faculty member in the Department of Archaeology at Çorum Hittite University and as director of the "Hittite Civilization Research Center." Ünal has numerous books, hundreds of articles, and encyclopedia entries in Turkish, English, and German on Hittite, other ancient Anatolian languages, history, culture, religion, magic, fortune-telling, medicine, archaeology, cuisine, lexicon, art, and political history. He has published numerous cuneiform texts, including the first batch of Ortaköy texts. His dictionary, which includes German equivalents and was published in Hamburg in 2007, is the product of his extensive experience and the culmination of his arduous work. His three-volume work, titled "Anatolia in the Hittite Era" (2002-2005), serves as a handbook. He is currently preparing a much expanded edition of these books, covering all aspects of Hittite culture, titled "Hittite History" and "Anatolia in the Revolutionary Era."
