Surface surveys conducted in the valleys and surrounding areas leading to the Dardanelles have yielded significant and abundant data on Byzantine-era settlements in the region. These archaeological data have shed light on the location, distribution, and density of Byzantine-era settlements in the valleys leading to the Dardanelles. Marble and stone artifacts constitute a significant portion of the Byzantine-era archaeological data. This study is an assessment of the marble and stone artifacts with liturgical and architectural functions discovered in settlements on both shores of the Dardanelles.
